Now you know anyone who graduates from Nigeria’s tertiary institutions without actively investing in personal development is already disadvantaged. Now you know it’s important to maximize your service year right? Good. Let’s take it from there…
Your NYSC year is not a joke. Time and tide waits for no man, invest in personal development. Take your job and assigned responsibilities very seriously. Seek opportunities to volunteer and develop relevant skills. If you don’t know how to use a computer, register for a short course. Take employability and work readiness trainings. Go online and look for free resources that will aid your development. Begin preliminary research on your where you’d like to work after NYSC. Look up companies, read up on how to market yourself, and how to deal with prospective employers.
If you don’t know what to learn, read up on and look for free e-courses on personal leadership, teamwork, communication skills, emotional intelligence etc. These are highly valuable skills in the workplace and will put you at an advantage over the rest of the pack.
To build your knowledge base, go for project management courses, if you have an affinity for IT, get certification. Learn graphics, animation, catering, or fashion design. Employers are looking for reasons to employ you, especially because more often than not, you do not possess prior work experience. So show them what you got!
If anything, you should thank the Federal Government of Nigeria for giving you one year to prepare for life after school and then paying you while you’re at it.
